The Meuse Rhine Issel or MRI cow (in some countries it is also known as the MRY) originates from the Netherlands and has been bred as a dual-purpose cow, a source of both milk and beef. The breed is named after the three Dutch rivers in the south-eastern part of the country, the Maas, Rhine and Ijssel and it was on the banks of these rivers where the breed was developed in the 19th century.

The MRI cow is renowned for its high milk yields which is also characterised by it’s naturally high protein content perfect for making ice cream !! A MRI cow is of medium size and the breed benefits from strong feet and legs, it is also well known for it quiet and docile temperament, longevity and easy calving. MRI cows are originally red and white in colour (many of our herd are black and white due to cross breeding but in time we hope to achieve a full red and white herd of pedigree MRI’s) and they easily adapt to varying conditions.

The largest MRI populations are found in Holland, Germany and Belgium, however since the first MRI cattle were imported to the UK and Ireland in 1972, there are now sizeable populations of pedigree MRI’s in both countries.

If you would like further information on the breed it can be obtained from the Meuse Rhine Issel Cattle Society of the United Kingdom at www.mri.org.uk
